Overview

an opportunity to add extra value

LADOT asked The Glue to quickly upgrade deprecated CMS versions, core components, plugins, and packages with the latest appropriate equivalents before an Azure server update would render them obsolete.

When we proposed a facelift as part of the migration using a design system that would essentially reskin the website with a new look and cost them no downtime, LADOT jumped at the opportunity.

Stakeholder Interviews & analytics

We started by grabbing analytics to look at the most visited pages and user journeys. We didn’t have a ton of time for research but we wanted to make sure that if there were major issues facing the public, we would at least be able to share that information—if not fix it—during the redesign.

remove the clutter, improve the findability

The old site design wasn’t as clean or as focused as it could be. There had been numerous attempts at solving the problem of helping visitors find what they were looking to achieve, but this had resulted in too many search options and boxes, which was confusing.

streamlining change

I used a mix of existing brand assets and photography to generate mood boards that helped me pin down a feeling for the new site. It had to be clean, accessible, and modern, but relatable at the same time. I wanted it to be something LA would appreciate.

We created an MUI design system for LADOT, which allowed our developer to replace and reskin the inner pages in short order.

a revitalized online site.

Using the requirements created and gathered from our research, I put together some concepts for the homepage and created templates for the different types of inner pages we had classified. We were also able to focus on the search functionality and create quick links that took visitors to the parking payment URL in one step.

Results

on time, no outages, and improved accessibility

We were able to increase the accessibility compliance level from 80.72% to 85.17% without doing much other than implementing an updated design system and the redesigned homepage.
